Replacing a Victron GX device in VRM involves physical replacement, software changes on the GX device, and VRM configuration to preserve data.
You will need to manually reconfigure settings on the new GX device, this replacement guide is only for the VRM data, and does not include transferring any configuration on the GX device itself.
Physical Replacement
Power down the system safely, disconnect and remove the old GX device, then install and connect the new one.
Ensure the new device is powered up and connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Check the VRM menu on the GX device to confirm it has connected to VRM before proceeding.
Make any additional software settings changes required (such as correctly setting the location of an AC PV inverter, Energy Meter, or Victron EVCS).
VRM Configuration
Complete this step as soon as possible after the physical replacement. There will be a data gap between when the original GX device stopped reporting and when the replacement is configured in VRM.
Note the replacement GX device’s VRM Portal ID, visible in the VRM menu on the GX device and on a sticker on the unit.
In VRM, click “Add Installation” and select “Replace GX Device.” The same option applies regardless of the model being replaced.
Enter the VRM Portal ID of the new replacement GX device and click "Add GX"
Select the original installation that contains the historical data you wish to preserve.
Take your time to carefully review the confirmation screen. Pay particular attention to the dates, serial numbers and Portal ID and confirm that they all match what you expect.
Once you have confirmed all details to be correct, tick the confirmation checkbox, and proceed.
As a final step you need to manually reboot your replacement GX device. The system will not update or accurately record data until the GX device is restarted.
Verification and Cleanup
Test the system to ensure all components (inverters, solar chargers, batteries) are correctly monitored and controlled via the new GX device.
Verify remote access through VRM, including Remote Console and VictronConnect-Remote features.
As part of this replacement process there will be an additional 'orphan' site in your VRM installations list. After confirming everything works and no valuable data will be lost you can remove this installation from VRM. It normally contains a small amount of gap data that was collected between physically connecting the GX device, and performing the replacement procedure in VRM that linked it to the historical data.
